Born in New Orleans, Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. discovered his passion for rap while growing up in the Hollygrove neighborhood. His raw potential caught the attention of Cash Money Records when he was just 11 years old, placing him right at the center of the city’s rising hip-hop scene. Carter went on to team up with B.G., Juvenile, and Turk to form the Hot Boys, a move that provided crucial studio mileage and broadened his reach. That early momentum and visibility ultimately laid the groundwork for his explosive run as a solo artist.
At 17, Carter released "Tha Block Is Hot," his first album under the Lil Wayne name. The 1999 project reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, an impressive result for a teenage rapper. His next releases, "Lights Out" and "500 Degreez," showed an artist still searching for new ways to express himself. That experimentation became more pronounced with "Tha Carter" in 2004 and "Tha Carter II" in 2005, records that placed greater emphasis on elaborate rhymes, sharp punchlines, unconventional imagery, and Wayne's increasingly individual writing style.
A substantial part of his reputation was built outside the conventional album cycle. Wayne released mixtapes at a remarkable rate, with "Dedication 2" and "Da Drought 3" becoming particularly influential. He also appeared on numerous records by other performers, turning guest verses into another avenue for expanding his presence and demonstrating his versatility.
The commercial peak of this period arrived with "Tha Carter III" in 2008. The album opened with more than one million U.S. sales in its first week and produced major tracks including “Lollipop,” “A Milli,” and “Got Money.” Its success brought Wayne four Grammy Awards in 2009, among them Best Rap Album.
His contribution to rap was not limited to his personal catalog. Through Young Money Entertainment, the label he founded, Wayne helped provide an early platform for Drake and Nicki Minaj, whose later careers became major forces in global popular music.
Wayne continued building an extensive discography with releases including "Rebirth," "Tha Carter IV," "I Am Not a Human Being II," "Tha Carter V," and "Funeral." Contractual disputes and delays surrounding "Tha Carter V" kept the album unreleased for years before its 2018 arrival. "Tha Carter VI" followed in 2025, extending a series that had become central to his career.
Across more than 30 years, Lil Wayne has combined relentless productivity with an individual approach to rap, influencing both the music itself and the artists who followed through him.
